Attempting to mentally prepare myself for what I should expect in Belize. Garifuna is the name of a particular group of people of African descent unique to parts of Central America, particularly in Belize.
I could get into this.
*Thanks to warasadrumschool for the clarification.

Oh but you’re wrong – Garifuna people are not of Mayan or European descent at all. They are of African mixed with indigenous Arawak and Carib Indian descent. Their language is a mixture of Arawak, Nigerian, French, Spanish and English, because of the different people they encountered, but in terms of pure bloodlines, definitely no European or Mayan. Of course these days many Garifuna people marry Scottish people like me or Mayan people however

You’re welcome – I’m an expat Scot living with my Garifuna husband down in the south, Punta Gorda (PG) – let me know if you’ll be coming this way!

I’ll be staying in PG for the entire month of October! I will come look you up when I arrive. I’ll be landing in Belize City Saturday afternoon and catching a flight to PG that evening.

Cool – you’re volunteering with ProWorld or doing something else? Anyway, I’m the local Scottish white gal called Ruth, and my husband is a 6ft 2 Garifuna drummer called Ray (full name Ronald Raymond McDonald – no joke). If you’re interested in the whole Garifuna thing, have a look at our website http://www.warasadrumschool.com
